Lady Gaga speaks about mental health following tragic celebrity suicides


Laga Gaga spoke out about mental health at the Children Mending Hearts’ Empathy Rocks fundraiser on Sunday. The singer spoke on the issue in light of recent tragic deaths including those of Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, Danny Kirwan and Eunice Gayson.

The songstress presented the Global Changemakers Award to Cynthia Germanotta, her mother, at the fundraiser. Gaga and her mother were both given acknowledgment for the Born This Way Foundation that they worked to  build.

The duo are working on spreading kindness and empathy through their work. Gaga addressed the public, encouraging people to seek professional help for mental health issues. She also insisted that everyone must be kind to one another, since you never know what someone might be going through.

Gaga spoke about her foundation’s purpose. She said, “We bring people together to have real, honest conversations and to be kind.”

She also added that kindness should be the driving force for our actions. “Kindness is not an afterthought to our work. It is the driving power for everything we do. It is the lens we view every challenge through. It is framing the way we put everything around every possible solution.”

She continued to talk about how kindness can solve problems,“To me, almost every problem you can think of can be solved with kindness. At least it could be made better.”

The star addressed the misconception people have about kindness; they view it as a weakness. However, that should not be the case. Gaga stated, “Kindness has a soft undertone. Sometimes people think it is weak. It is tremendously powerful. It can change the way that we view each other. The way that we view our communities and the way that we work. Even the way that we feel about ourselves, by being kinder to ourselves. We need more kindness in the world.”

The singer also shared her own mental health challenges. She told the audience, “I have struggled for a long time, both being public and not public about my mental health issues or my mental illness. But, I truly believe that secrets keep you sick.”

She further added that kindness helped her discover bravery, “I realize that it’s actually safer to say how I feel. What Children Mending Hearts is doing today rocks because it’s safer for others who feel like me.”

The Pokerface singer took her time at the microphone to address themes of mental health, especially depression and suicide. Besides that, she also addressed how empathy can go a long way; it can help people open up and speak about their illnesses.

As Gaga concluded her speech, she expressed the urgent need for everyone to be kind to each other and especially to the ones struggling.

Her concluding remarks were, “Thank you Mom for not being afraid of my darkest thoughts and for doing what many don’t realize goes very far: just holding my hand and running an organization that helps hold the hands of others and join the hands of others. I love you.”

She also added, “Suicidal ideation feels like a spell and we have to have empathy. Be kind and help each other break that spell and live and thrive.”
