Kanye West talks his heart out about bipolar disorder, Trump, and Kim Kardashian

On Thursday evening, rapper Kanye West made an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show after 5 years, and talked about multiple things fans needed to understand.

The interview covered how Kanye felt about his 2016 hospitalization, his decision to speak out in support of Donald Trump, his wife Kim Kardashian, how he deals with his bipolar disorder, and how he manages to stay ‘Ye’.

Kanye triggered quite a bunch of people with his tweets during the elections, but while talking to Kimmel, he explained how the tweets ‘had nothing to do with politics’.

He explained, “[They] represented overcoming fear and doing what you felt, no matter what anyone said… If I’m afraid to be me, I’m no longer Ye. That’s what makes ‘Ye’.”

Kanye also stressed a lot on the importance of being honest with your own self.

On how he manages to stay ‘Ye’ in the face of difficult times, Kanye told Jimmy, “I think it’s important for us to have open conversations about mental health—especially with me being black. Because we never had therapists in the black community.”

He continued, “We never approached taking a medication. I think it’s good that when I had my first complete blackout at age 5, my mom didn’t fully medicate me. Because I might have never been ‘Ye. And there’s times where at least I’m happy that I know [I’m bipolar.] Like even like for this interview, I knew I wanted to stay in a calm state.”

His views on Donald Trump previously garnered a lot of negative attention for him, and he used this space to defend his support for the President.

“My cousin is locked up for murder. I love him, he still did a bad thing but I still love him. As a musician, an African American guy on Hollywood, all these different things.”

“Everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me. And then told me every time I said I liked Trump that I couldn’t say it out loud or my career would be over, I’d get kicked out of the black community…”

Kanye also added, “So, even when I said it right before I went to the hospital and I expressed myself… When I came out I had lost my confidence. So I didn’t have the confidence to take on the world and the possible backlash. And it took me a year and a half to have the confidence to stand up and put on the hat. No matter what the consequences were.”

While Kanye was vocal about how ‘people need to express themselves without fear or judgment’, he remained silent in response to Jimmy questioning his political loyalties.

Kanye West, 41, was speechless in response to Jimmy Kimmel challenging the pop stars support for Trump. Jimmy drew parallels of his support for Trump with his stand against the former president George W. Bush, post Hurricane Katrina, and confronted the star on his contradictory loyalties.

“There are families being torn apart at the border of this country,” Kimmel said.

“There are literally families being torn apart as a result of what this president is doing. Whether we like his personality or not, his actions are what matter. You so famously, and so powerfully said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” What makes you think that Donald Trump does or any people at all?”

The question silenced the Fade rapper, and Jimmy had to go for a quick break, as a much needed segue.

He further commented on Donald Trump, in relation to his Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s star wife, Kim K.

When Kimmel asked Kanye how he felt about the meeting, in which Kim K was addressing Mr. President on behalf of a 62 year old woman who had been imprisoned for 22 years, Kanye only had nice things to say for his wife.

“She’s super passionate about it and it was amazing for her to see that dream come true,” he told Kimmel.

But when Kimmel shifted the focus on Kim K being around Donald Trump, and how ‘Ye felt about that, he induced laughter and applause with his response: “He is a player.”
