2 year-old Ifrah Siddique passed away in a freak accident last Friday in Riverdale, Georgia, a little after 8pm, as she was trying on shoes at a Payless store.
A large mirror fell on her at the 7100 block, Georgia Highway 85 location while the toddler was trying on different shoes. Although she was rushed to the Southern Regional Medical Centre, she was pronounced dead on the spot.
The family confirmed the girls identity to 11Alive. Her father, Mohsin Siddique, told Fox5, that he feels “dead, like I am no more. That was my little girl.”
Her cousin, Aqib Iftikhar, told WTSP, that that the family is sticking together to pull through this difficult time.
“We’re pulling through. Everybody is still grieving and it’s really hard. We’re in a state of shock.”
An employee at the store next to Payless, Latish Culpatrick, heard the event happen. She told Fox she initially knew something serious happened when she heard a woman scream and a crash resounded through the air.
“I could hear the crash and the mom screaming.”
Sh then explained the details of the event, “Everybody was crowded around the door. It was just tragic. I’m sure the mom didn’t think twice when she was coming in to go shopping she wouldn’t come out with her child. That’s bad. Really bad.”
She also said that when she initially saw blood, she assumed the child had had a seizure, “I have a four year old which is why I wanted to help. I just saw blood, and I thought she just had a seizure or something, but I didn’t know it was that bad.”
The family also stressed that they believed the mirror was not properly secured, which is why it fell in the first place. They said it was so heavy, the could barely get it off their little girl when it initially fell over.
They also asked that the store take into account this incident and the safety of its customers and ensure shelves and mirrors are secure and in place to prevent another incident of this sort from occurring.
Although Payless initially offered no comments, a representative for the stores later told Fox5, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of Ifrah Siddique during this time of incredible loss. We are devastated by this tragic event and are fully cooperating with authorities to reach and understand the nature of this accident. Out of respect for the family, no further information will be provided at this time.”
The family says they will probably file a lawsuit against the store in the future.
